Insect Resistance Management (IRM)

2009 IRM Guide

An insect resistance management plan is mandated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Continued availability of YieldGard Insect - Protected Corn products depends on compliance with EPA registration conditions.

Compliance to IRM guidelines help to maintain the long-term value of traits offering built-in insect protection and minimize the risk of insect resistance.

IRM plans are required for purchasing trait seed and the key component to any IRM plan is the refuge.

An IRM corn refuge calculator can be helpful in planning your field configuration.  Depending on whether or not you are in a cotton planting region, please select the calculator that fits your needs.

The Insect Resistance Management Learning Center (IRMLC) is a web-based tool developed by the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) with the support of ABSTC, the coalition of the four leading agriculture biotechnology companies, to address the need for standardized, comprehensive training on the principles of Insect Resistance Management (IRM). The IRMLC allows corn growers to access training on several topics, including IRM, Compliance Assurance Program (CAP), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Corn Borer, and Corn Rootworm. Within each section, users of the IRMLC must complete a series of questions to demonstrate their knowledge. Upon satisfactory completion, the user can print out a certificate of completion.

You may access the IRMLC here:

As a condition of EPA registration, seed companies conduct IRM grower compliance assessments during the growing season to ensure that the guidelines are followed.

To report non-compliance of trait stewardship or if you have questions about IRM compliance or stewardship, you may anonymously call 1-800-768-6387.
